BIO /CV+

Paper sculptor

Originally from Quebec City, Karine Demers devotes her artistic career to the Laurentians region. Karine Demers studied spatial design and building design before developing her artistic output in visual presentation. Since 2018, several cultural venues and events have hosted her work, including Plural-Montréal, Art Toronto, EXPO CHICAGO, Future Fair in New York, the Maisons de la culture de Montréal, and the Centre national d'exposition de Jonquière, to name a few. The patiently crafted works of this self-taught visual artist reflect her personality through their creative vitality, as well as the delicacy of some pieces. They can be found in several public and private collections.

Approach

Navigating the work of repetition and the healing process through meditative acts, Karine Demers's creations are the result of an intimate creative process, addressing the constraints inherent in habit disorders (obsessive-compulsive disorder), anxiety, and the rhythm of life. Each work is composed of a large number of pieces of paper, folded or in strips, rigorously arranged on a surface like a painting, or suspended in space in a sculptural manner. The delicate calibration required by the complex composition of each piece balances the impression of excess caused by the impulse to repeat.

Demers draws part of her inspiration from the healing aspect of art, which articulates issues specific to identity and self-transformation. Through the accumulation of gestures, she proposes to sublimate the shame of psychological imbalance into a creative force. The punctuation of shapes and colors refuses any disorder and engenders the aesthetic satisfaction specific to catharsis, allowing the liberation and sublimation of troubled states into a restorative outcome.

Equally inspired by architecture and the observation of nature, Karine Demers has a particular penchant for the effects of light and shadows resulting from the three-dimensional aspect of her works. The light falling on reliefs of varying heights (and their inherent shadows) brings an important dimension to the work. These are parts of the work that must be considered. Demers observes the natural effects that occur within the work and attempts to accentuate their ability to change with the atmosphere.

The work is dependent on its habitat. Depending on its location, it reveals its multiple facets. In compositions of clean or organic shapes, this artist fascinates with the repetition of abstract elements, calling for simplicity and the eloquence of a meditative approach rooted in complexity.
